The Future of Agarwood Business in Bhutan

The young teenage boy gets enrolled himself in the school at the age of fourteen. He starts his school as early as 4 am in the morning and gets back home by dusk in late evening or sometimes at night. He does his best and completes fourth grade. He discontinues his studies despite being a bright student to help his aging parents at home. He then joins his eldest brother to earn some money as laborer in Agarwood business somewhere in Assam boarder and Nagaland in India. He promises some gift to his young bride on his return from the forest far away in foreign land. This is the brief story of my hardworking father.

His Agarwood stories of experience in the filed as young man use to thrill me. It was like horror movie story telling when he shared that they once shifted their camp in fallen dried logs to find out later it was a giant anaconda sleeping for long time to capture its prey. As I recall now that I was not matured enough to understand the details of the Agarwood business they did with the Indian counterpart in the deep jungle. He narrated that they used to select the most matured tree and try their luck to find its black trunk. The matured black trunk fetched them a good price. Their luck favored by few trees as they kept hunting one tree to another for months because not all trees get that money trunk.

That was the Agori Tree (he sounded) story I lived with since some two decades ago until I found one in Panbang at late Dasho Nishioka’s residence at Agar Camp near Panbang Bridge. The Agarwood plantation in Panbang must have been inspired by this far sighted Japanese man who had his vision for Bhutan some five decades ago in 1970s but none of us gave a heed. Today, we have his farm land as Agriculture Research & Development Centre (ARDC) and about two hundreds of Agarwood trees probably four to five decades’ old are thriving there. We took all these years to decide for nursery and plantation as we don’t find any planted saplings older than five years in average. Nevertheless, it’s not too late to start than never. We now can find nursery in almost every household in Panbang at Nu.15 to 20 per sapling.

Similarly, the trend of nursery and planation in lower Kheng to Nganglam in the South to Samdrup Jongkhar in the East is gaining its popularity except Samtse in the West. The people of East has somehow expected its good return in future and has invested in good amount and time. The dry lands with most of their orange produce declining each year has been replaced with Agarwood plantation. Some retired senior citizen has planted in large scale in their dryland and also in leased land. These lot of bold entrepreneurs might reap the perfect retirement benefit if they live another decade. However, many older and even younger lot doesn’t want to invest in this time taking project with minimum pay pack period of ten to fifteen years. Thus, few optimistic groups are taking serious in large scale plantation.

The Agarwood is the fragrant dark resinous wood formed in the heartwood of aquilaria tress when they become infected with a type of mold (Phialophora parasitica). The tree produces a dark aromatic resin called Aloes or Agar as infection progress. This resin embedded heartwood contains distinctive fragrance which is used for incense, medicine and perfumes. The natural formation of aloes or agar is only about 7 out of 100 Aquilaria trees and a common method in artificial forestry is to inoculate tress with the fungus (Wikipedia).  We do have most probably Aquilaria Malaccensis or Aquilaria Agallocha species in Bhutan which is world class and considered best in international markets (Kuensel, December 1st, 2015).

The growers are obviously opting for inoculation rather than waiting for natural formation which takes at least 20 years. While, the inoculation brings down the harvest time almost halves of it to 8 to 10 years at the max and some aspiring investors are expecting in 5 years’ time which might be too optimistic target. Some Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) was interested to invest in Bhutan few years’ back but pandemic destroyed the plan. They wanted to inoculate in 6th year tree and harvest after two years in 8th year at $230 per tree which might be similar to Hazelnut agreement by Mountain Hazelnut Venture (MHV). While, our own private entrepreneurs are trying bold to inoculate in 3rd year and harvest after two years in 5th year which may inspire many growers if it is successful. In price also they are planning at lucrative rate of Nu. 10,000 per kilogram to the growers. However, the growers need to bear the inoculation charges of Nu.800 to Nu.1200 per tree if they want to inoculate in 3rd year as the inoculation charges goes up for bigger or matured trees.

What makes many growers still doubtful on this long term investment is less expertise on nursery for large scale planation and the market at end. However, the Green Bhutan Corporation Ltd. (GBCL) may soon guide and lead the growers in large scale nursery. The existing nursery growers are putting their indigenous knowledge to collect the local seed from the mother trees and grow in small polythene bag. Some grow in mother bed and later transplant it to poly bag. Some even prefer to let it grow under the mother tree soil bed and transplant it in the poly bag later. The seed and sapling adapt only in natural topsoil and clay without any compost or cow dung manure and fertilizers. The seed can germinate within 2 to 3 months and grow to about 10 to 15 cm tall in another few months. The sapling can be planted in the field by June and needs care where some insects attack the young leaves. It needs to be treated with some insecticides spray which is not preferred but the pest control must be there for proper growth of the saplings. One can choose the desired plantation pattern keeping sufficient space in between ranging from 2 meters to 5 meters’ distance. The saplings can grow up to 8-foot tall in 18 months in favorable soil condition and southern elevation.

The artificial inoculation also yet to be fully successful and today there are few private individuals with permits who are carrying out the inoculation on trial basis. Some growers are reluctant to inoculate as their trees are dying with probably different grade inoculation chemical used by the suppliers. The domestic market in traditional medicine at Nu.70 per kilogram doesn’t impress growers (Kuensel, December 1st, 2015). We may have potential numbers of trees around one lakh plus for the inoculation in next five years and would start production in 10 years from now for export. Thus, the growers and investors are hopeful that our Research and Development Centre (RDC) would soon present credible proof on its commercial viability in international market in near future with the export permit from CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).

The value addition in the product with processing unit in Bhutan in future would add more value to our fragile economy. We may add to our private forest list even if we fail to harvest for international market. We may add to the green forest repository in carbon sequestration to be a Carbon Neutral country in all times to come. Above all, we will be able to conserve it from its IUCN Red List of Critically Endangered category. If every one of us plant a single agarwood tree in a Social Forestry Day on 2nd June every year that will keep us away from the extinction list where some country has already lost its habitat.

My Family Tree-Part I

The family tree is the basic social institution we graduate from birth to death but only few of us honor it. We somehow kept the old cliché of family business to its superficial understanding rather than its actual business. The business of our bloodline. We have neglected the very tree that gave us life and merely know the first generation relatives. We became so busy in our own lives that family meetings or gathering happened mostly when any elderly family member passes away. The first meeting of the first cousins or relatives also coincidently happens in such unceremonious time. We often visit cities and market place for leisure and vacation but seldom visit our own home or relatives. Many of our children must have never seen their living grandparents. We know more strangers than our own family members. We became so divided that we unite only when we are dying.

We don’t get along even if we get life time opportunity to live together in a large family or separately after marriage. We needed them the most when we were young and we are constantly drifting away from our root. We are slowly losing our identity of our bloodline and lineages. We are losing our mother tongue in a rapid pace within one generation gap. This trend will escalate in few decades and the family tree will be soon gone in next few generations to come, if we take it lightly as we are doing it right now. It is sad to know that many of us in this generation neglect to even keep the surname which is the Title of our lineage. The Title or the surname is the key to unlock the family tree and the bloodline relation for generations to come. While, many would contemplate that the lineage title and surname is only for high-end royal class family but it’s equally important for all class family. The very basic of its importance is to know how you are biologically related as a family through the generations. It may sound vague for many as we live only one generation but our generation matters a lot to our younger generation.

The surname or title predominantly gets it tag from the fathers’ surname and sadly the gender inequality in mothers persisted since the ancestral time. This is how a woman’s get the second surname after her marriage in orthodox Hindu family. First from her parents and second from her husband. Today, not necessary as they keep their inherited title. The concept of inter-cast marriage is preferred for better offspring despite the averse acceptance by the elderly members in the family. The love marriage by younger generation has taken over the family matters over the arranged marriage by the older generations. While, both types of marriages has its own pros and cons but definitely elder generation kept the family tree intact. The younger lots with modern education and life styles are gradually moving away from their own family culture and tradition.

The untimely demise of my father in 2014 left me much concerned over the dying culture in our family. He was the only son to my grandparents next to his eldest brother among five of them who practiced and preserved our family business culture from being family pujari to our linguistic master. But sadly, none of the three sons among us were able to inherit his rich cultural wisdom right from our mother tongue to annual puja mantra. Fortunately, my youngest brother is reviving and holding onto our family culture with the guidance of our first cousin brothers who are our family cultural assets next to our aging uncles.

Thus, it is a time where we draw our family tree for real and pass on to our children to let them know how far we came from our individual parents. Let us introduce them to their cousin siblings, uncle and aunts in the family group if they are yet to meet or see them personally. We may have a family zoom meeting or video conference to listen and talk to our elderly family member. This is how they learn to address family relatives and respect other than family members in the society. The disciplined children make a good family. The good family in the society makes the better society. The better society makes the better world.

The family matters least to those who think they don’t matter but family matters a lot for those who think they matter. The later makes the better world. The family matter matters and so is the family tree for it is the source we came from. This is my Rungmangcha (Rupabung) Dilpali Rai family tree of Golaytar for the Family Tree-Part I and I will cover the siblings of my father in Part II where my first cousins/relative nephews Mr.Sancha Bdr. Rai and Mr. Tara Bir Rai is already working.

The Golden Eggs from India in Bhutanese Market

The Bhutanese Poultry Farmers are not happy ever since the government decided to import the eggs from India to ‘Address Shortage and to Lower Costs’ (Kuensel-January 11, 2022). The Mongar Poultry Farmers’ petition dismissal by the Court (BBS-February 15, 2022) is another blow to the farmers across the country.

Everyone knew the shortage was due to the contaminated Karma Feed affect and not from farmers’ end. They were not even fairly compensated and yet many innocent farmers kept silent. They digested their loss and still striving with their remaining lot at their farm house. While, our highly educated consumers and netizen were blunt and bold to blame the toiling illiterate farmers for overpriced tag. Some disguised politician in the fake face book page writes a humiliating and discouraging message to the farmers stating they will keep importing eggs till the price normalizes.

It is not the farmers who sky rocketed the price of local eggs but the covetous vendors or middleman who want to keep the hefty margin leaving poor farmers blamed. This is something every frustrated consumers and decision makers must have thought before putting a blame to the farmers. The interim measures to import the egg is sensible but farmers should know its interim so that they don’t get demotivated. Why our farmers are made to compete the Indian market price strategy when they are struggling to regain the production?

They can easily sustain their farm business at the minimum rate of Nu. 2,000 per cartoon at their ex-factory farm house outlet to maximum of Nu. 2,300 per cartoon which was recently fixed by the Bhutan Livestock Development Corporation Ltd. (BLDCL). The vendors are given Nu.150 per cartoon margin to reach Thimphu which becomes Nu. 2,450 per cartoon. Thus, the existing price per tray stands at Nu.350 while imported eggs cost Nu.320.  Earlier, the vendors use to keep Nu.300 or more per cartoon which led to the sky rocket price of local eggs. So, don’t blame the innocent farmers. We still have that Nu.300 per cartoon to play with the imported eggs price to bring it at par or even lower. I would still go with the local product giving Nu.30 extra over the imported for various reasons which may be lengthy to explain here.

The other sad reality would be still that above BLDC rate might be hiked by the sub-dealers and shopkeepers as many consumers in the remote areas are already paying as high as Nu.550 per tray for the imported eggs. So, did we really lower the price of local eggs by importing eggs? Now tell us who is sky rocketing the price? Our farmers don’t hike or fix price as they are happy to accept the price fixed by the BLDC. They don’t deceive or cheat you on price. Don’t forget that every Bhutanese is a son or daughter of the dedicated farmers and you been just in cities because of them. Every food on your table is the result of their sweat and blood. Don’t forget the root. Please, don’t blame them without knowing the background story. Be in their shoes and think for a second. This is called empathy. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is more important than Intelligent Quotient (IQ) to be a good leader.

Bhutanese poultry farmers can easily meet the market demand with good guidance from the concerned agencies and support from the consumers too. We already had achieved the egg self-sufficiency a decade ago in 2012 and is sad to know we are declining. We even exported the eggs after four years of self-sufficiency in 2016 (Kuensel-December 7, 2016). How long are we going to import for such essential goods which our farmers can easily make sufficient for small Bhutan? We have come a long way in this poultry business and many of us would be surprised to know that the Poultry Development Programme started in our country six decades ago in 1961 with the launch of First Five Year Plan.

Sarpang and Tsirang use to be the most eggs producing dzongkhags in the country just six years ago which must be still holding its position. Today, Peljorling Chiwog alone has five poultry farms in almost each village with the total numbers of about 7,600 layers’ chicken. The Burichu has more numbers of farm house in almost all households. They have the poultry community among the farmers in Tsirang called Tsirang Smart Group (TSG) with about sixty-one members and similarly in Sarpang called Sarpang Layers Corporative (SLC). They have their vision for our small Nation like all of us in a small way. They are struggling and growing. They have their loans or debts against their farm.

The fellow farmers are not only discouraged from poultry farming across the country but for almost all organic vegetables products. For example, the Dagana farmers produced good quantity of organic onions but they were left alone later. Same with the green chilli production. They need our support in market distribution channels and fixing the price. They can toil in the field for all of us. Let’s encourage them by buy back policy but not discourage by import policy. Let’s supply them quality feed but not harm them by contaminated feed. Let us support them by expanding their business ideas rather than blaming on the high price of local produce. The organic is always better. They are authentic. They are home made. They are made in Bhutan. This is how we preserve our Culture and Tradition. This is something we can include in Bhutan First rather than other sophisticated projects.

The Fading Love

Thou art my lucky star,

I was constantly gazing at you,

From the crowd of buzzing lovers afar,

And I finally found you there smiling in a queue!

Thy beauty in my eyes,

Was an immortal image to behold,

For thou became the love of my choice,

And I shall cherish our bond of love truly bold!

Thy love sparkle in darkest,

Throughout the journey of our brief life,

Alas my love in the voyage drifted to the farthest,

Leaving me all alone all over again myself to strive!

I need thy lost love,

To embrace my solitary waiting soul,

And bring back those intimate romance alive,

For I need thy love for the rest of my life to be blissful!

Keep me in thy love green,

Not just in special occasions once a year,

But all day all night passionate that could have been,

For I yearn for never fading love with my eyes filled in tears!

Talk to me my love,

Walk with me under the moonlit night,

Love me tonight to the merging soul I dissolve,

For I need you my love in every pulse of my inner sight!

I need thy same love,

The same charm thou gave me at first,

For I need you to be my lucky star all time above,

And keep counting on thy love till I breathe my last!

Tashi Cell-Student Chenpo Data Plan

I chose Tashi Cell over Bhutan Telecom (B-Cell) for its better connectivity in my work place. I have been enjoying their services for quite long time now and the customer service trust was growing until I tried their Student Chenpo Data Plan of Nu.697 for 32,493 MB. My wife who is also a Tashi Cell user wanted me to recharge her the best Data Plan through eTeeru app in my Cell. She also wanted to keep her promise to recharge her Cell through eTeeru for my CashBack Wallet of 4% in every recharge. So, I decided to impress her with Student Chenpo Plan only to discover that her talk time became nil while she browsed the net as usual after the recharge. She was furious instead of impressed with my offer.

I dialed the Customer Care number and they confirmed that the recharge has been successful. I explained them that the data is not working as the talk time is being deducted while using the internet. They suggested to switch off the cell once and set the network in 4G option. The suggestion was followed due diligently and yet it was not working. I had to call them second time for further clarification. This time, I got the insight of the Plan in detail which I was supposed to know before I even try one. It was my fault indeed to jump in the advertisement of product without going through its terms and conditions displayed against each data plans in their website as they claim.

I was explained that this Student Chenpo Plan works only for Google Classroom and few other apps approved by the Ministry of Education (MoE). I was blunt to assume that this very data plan would at least give access to Google and YouTube for students’ study materials. The cell number was fortunately registered for such data plan while school was collecting parents’ number for online classes.  I requested them if it can be converted to another data plans and they told me there is no such option. I further asked them if it can be transferred to another student registered number so that it can be utilized wisely as my daughters’ online classes are yet to start. Sadly, no such option for this request too. I again enquired that if it can be renewed for my daughters’ online classes which shall soon start in next month if COVID-19 situation doesn’t improve. My third attempt of hope in retrieving the Chenpo Plan also failed with big NO, “We are sorry sir. We don’t have these options in this Plan”. Fortunately, they were polite to respond me and note my feedbacks in quite long conversation.

These data plans and any other services must be as per the industry norms taking care of the customers need. In this regard, many would agree that such product which customers cannot use it properly is not customers oriented but rather customer neglected. When other plans or talk time can be converted into other plans as well and why not this Student Chenpo? Why students are given the least access in the internet when they need most for the study resources? Most online classes are under the guidance of parents at home for primary students. There is less chance student can browse bad content but how far this can be controlled through this Chenpo Plan? Handful of school across the nation might be using the Google Classroom and most primary school uses Telegram and WhatsApp for online classes and study materials. The Late Night unlimited plan is another breeding ground for PUBG players among the students and nocturnal activities. People need healthy sleep at this late hour night but one can choose it.

The other bitter reality is when they take back the balance data or talk time when we forget to renew it even after their notification by at least Nu.99 data plan. How much financial implication or the revenue would they generate by taking back the data or talk time we already bought? The company should at least be generous to give the customers what they have already paid for it. If Tashi Cell can take care of customers’ feedback whether its small or big, they won’t be far from being the second cohort to receive the GNH of Business Certificate next to Bhutan Telecom Ltd.

The Red Dot

I was born out of it,

Why should I run away from it now?

I was clinging firmly on the strong walls of the uterus,

Travelling through the fallopian tube after the great union of my parents’ love!

Why Should I discriminate it now?

By chance of my own being in the process of another life,

Am I not selfish to the women I owe much as a legitimate creator?

It’s all about breaking down of unlucky potential life not a taboo blood stain!

No man experiences the pain,

The woman goes through every cycle without any complain.

Yet many ignore and distant them rather than giving them comfort.

The society at large still believe that they are dirty to prepare food or enter temple!

Let us not fool ourselves,

In the beliefs of unhygienic minds of the hyenic nature,

That came out of uneducated dominating minds towards women,

For we ought to teach our younger generation to respect woman for better future!

My dear girls and women,

You all can cook as long you don’t feel sick or tired.

Gone are the days you all had to hide your face for a week in your first period,

All you need to do is maintain hygiene and roam free in your house with siblings!

It is the power of women,

That men have mistaken as her weakness for ages,

The true colour of all lives the Red Dot had been concealed in the fake green,

The world need to awake the unawakened to see the beauty of life in its serene!

The Evolving Nganglam Town

Nganglam is a South-eastern region of the country sharing a border with Pathsala, India at Pelzomthang (Bijan Bari), Integrated Check-post (ICP). It's about 7 km drive from ICP to Nganglam Town. Nganglam is evolving at quick pace after the country's biggest Cement Plant came into existence since 2012. Ever since the project phase of Dungsam Cement Corporation Ltd. (DCCL) in 2008, the Nganglam Town simultaneously started its construction activities.

The Nganglam Town

The giant DCCL

The Town has evolved since then with shopping centers to hotels to banking services. The Town stretches in Phatoongwong area within 1 km on both left and right Bank of Nganglam River. The area is quite congested to call it a Town and one can see only few buildings but there are about eleven hotels in the hidden town. The Nganglam River has given its space of both right and left bank for the town to come up and the DCCL cement factory in Tshenkeri.
The Nganglam River

The Nganglam Town and the DCCL factory has utilized most of the Nganglam River banks one can see many short bridges in between to cross time and again. You have to cross about five bridges to reach DCCL factory site from Nganglam Town and another two bridges from factory towards Gyelposhing highway. Infact, you will come across one unique rope bridge if you are crossing to opposite area of the town in small village. The bridge is unique that its one end foundation support is the two trees and CGI sheet floor support to be called as Tsasho Zam???? Zugad Engineering in Bhutan. My country my town.

The Tsagsho Zam with the Tree foundation

The Dhob Bridge near DCCL Gate

The Fuel Station is in the town and one can fuel the vehicle enroute and other fuel station is near the ICP. There are two workshops at the town and another four workshops in Tsenkeri. One new workshop is also there in Metogang about 4 km from town towards ICP. So, there are sufficient numbers of workshops in the area. If you are looking for a liquor shop and you can drive to the oldest Nganglam building area near the bridge at the left Bank of Nganglam River which is at center point of Nganglam Town. You will find a Taxi stand on the other side of the bridge. The school and the hospital is within the town area.

BOD Fuel Station at Town

The D.D Workshop at Gasheri Bali

The evolving and the small town has Guru Rinpoche Statue on the rock with glass covering structure in the town. The chorten in the main town area is good place for the spiritual minds to visit and spend time. The Dratshang in the Southern hill overlooking the Dungkhag office on the way to Panbang looks like watching and guarding the Nganglam Town over evils. The lake at the Nganglam Middle Secondary School site would be future tourist spot if it can be properly revived. The Yangbari plain about 35 km from Nganglam looks potential for Indian tourist for sightseeing and birding.

The Guru Statue
                                                           The School Lake/Gasheri Tsho

The Yangbari Manas River

Nganglam with its unique geographical location and the river flow direction of almost South to North is something interesting facts about its origin of the place. Many believe that Nganglam means the "confused path" where the river itself seems to lost it course of the flow to South just because of the small neck like ridge and had to follow the course towards Tshenkeri to the North. But other group simply agree that it's just a pass or path (Lam) to the nearest Indian border through a neck (Ngang) like hill. The name Dungsam also has its own origin where people translates from three places (Dung-village, Sam-three) of present gewogs (Decheling, Norbugang & Chokherling) or three mountains but in general it has nothing to connect with three places as Pemagatshel itself is called Dungsam Pemagatshel in the past.

So when you visit Nganglam try to see it in natural aesthetic point of view and not in a small industrial town of big a big cement factory.

Letter To My Niblings

My Dear Niblings,

You all are the luckiest children among many deprived ones in this World. You all are the loved and cared children of your hard working parents. You all are the Z- Generation of this 21st Century in modern era today. You all own a mobile phone for easy excess to digital world while your parents can’t still afford one. You are given choice to spend your winter or summer break as a holiday package while most of your Uncle and Aunts use to help the parents back at village or earn for next school season expanses through temporary job. A very few of you have just experienced the temporary jobs for a short period and even parents don’t want you all to toil like they did just to make you more educated in the hope of better life for you all and them. They have invested a lot in you all both in time and money so far. They have sacrificed many things in life since your childhood till this teenage age with the expectation of better son and daughter every day. You all will be always a small baby till their last breath. People often say all these motherly love and fatherly care are attained only after one becomes parent themselves but it is wrong perception I would say. You all have seen your younger siblings grow and have seen all the love and care parents give. That is more than enough for you all to experience all these parental care and analyze the same.

Your main purpose right now as a student is to focus on your studies and excel in it keeping the above foundation as a baseline for who you want to become in future. You need not necessarily have a specific dream job right away to become an Engineer or a Doctor but must have at least one dream by now that is to do well in the subjects you have taken. Every dream must have a goal and dream without a goal is day dreaming and how many of you do that? If you are among the day dreamers, then your dream will always be a far dream which you will never achieve in your life time. Your parents dream of you will be shattered. Your goal and objectives for now is nothing but to do well in studies. Do your home works on time and practice daily whatever is taught in a day. This will make your teachers- second parents happy and you will automatically be a good student.  Take a revision on a chapter every week so that you don’t have to be panicked at exam time. Your result will be obvious grade A. Your dream will be closer without day dreaming. You must put in your above efforts daily for a good result.  If you plant a tree, don’t dream of its fruit right away but you must first nurture it with good water and soil. The tree will bear its fruits at its right time. Always chose the front desks in the class even if you are weak or average guy.  Don’t go with the first benchers’ theory and last benchers’ comments. I was first benchers since my pre-primary because I was shortest and I am still today. There are tremendous advantages in it and you will slowly develop your skills of brilliant student. Your feeling of weak and average student will slowly vanish as positive power of being brighter student will follow you but you must put in your efforts of daily practice. Practice makes a man perfect. Make it a daily routine. Your result will be always good. Your teacher will be proud of your performance and your parents would be more proud.

It is the competitive world today. You have both opportunities and difficulties in your journey. As COVID-19 pandemic has swept the World in to the verge of global economic crisis, the Gen-Z (You All) must prove your definition beyond the expectation of your Gen-X parents. It is for this reason of online education system and the right use of internet and social media, you were given the smart phones NOT for the Online Games and Facebooking. Parents still have black and white phones while you own expensive Smart Phones. You must use it in a proper way to reap the maximum benefit of online education system. Your innocent parents recharge your phones often and are you all properly using it? They can’t deny because they are living in the hope and expectation of their dream of You. The government has given you the subsidized data package for online education system and have invested a lot in the hope of future citizen of the country. Remember, your dream must also cover that you will be a caring & loving son or daughter and a responsible citizen of a country.

However, it is disheartening for many parents while children are misusing the facilities given to them especially by playing PUBG. You are wasting parents and governments money which will dearly cost you all at later stage of your life. My dear Niblings, you are wasting your time and energy in such alien game I would say. Human being doesn’t fight the war the way you all do in this game. Human being is full of love and compassion in fact. You will learn this in later chapter of your life but no harm if you want to learn it now. You will be more human. There is a difference in human being and being human. The PUBG game and substance abuse are no difference to me even if you want to prove me wrong by your definition I would be least bothered for I don’t want to waste time in such bogus stuffs. You will destroy your body and mind equally by both. Most importantly, you are wasting the precious TIME which define all the aspect of your Life. Time and tide wait for no man.

While back at your home during school holidays, help your parents as much as possible. You will learn the social and family life at young age which is one of the most important chapter of your life later. Be niece to them and respect them. You will feel the love and they will be proud to see you all getting matured. You all are lucky ones to get the care and love of your parents where many unfortunate ones dearly miss their parental love and care since childhood. They have void in their hearts longing for their parents’ love and yet struggling for the same purpose. You have opportunity to learn to love and serve them simply by helping your mother in cooking and washing with willingness. If you are a boy, don’t think cooking and washing is not a manly task. You are gender discriminating as today’s world is full of gender equality. You will fail as a bachelor at first and most importantly you will not meet the criteria of a future husband. Help your sisters and mother in house chores. You will be a loving brother, caring son and a wise man undoubtedly. All these small things which you all think not important are big things that you all have to do lifelong for your living. Guide your younger siblings they will follow your steps. Listen to the advice of your parents and elders for they will never stop you from doing good. Unfortunately, if your parents are not able to guide you, seek the advice of your uncles/aunts. Some parents are still struggling with hard days’ work despite of their health conditions. You never know when they will lose the fight they are fighting for you all at the cost of their life. They have loan debt for your education. You all are matured enough to see all these struggles with your own eyes yet you are ignoring to realize the fact. By this age, all the above factors of life must be realized to achieve your dream. So, my dear Niblings at least fulfil the role of a good student now for they want to see their dream through you.

Chose a hobby that suits your passion to balance your study life. It need not be big or best but you must have passion in doing it. It must keep you engaged even for a short period of time. Remember all small and tiny things are always powerful in nature. Reading and writing hobby will greatly enhance your literature skills. You will master the language and write-up skills by the time you graduate and it is the most important skill you need in your career life irrespective of any job or position you hold. Chose a lighter indoor game for your body fitness. Likewise, Art or photography, Dancing or singing, etc. You will find the love and peace within. Life is an art, express it through your hobbies with passion. Make best use of the time by doing all good things I have shared, you will reap the most in life. If you take this advice seriously, you won’t be far from reaching your goal in life. Be a good son or daughter of your parents. Be a smart student of your teacher. Be a good elder to your younger ones. You will be a good human being which is the purpose of our Life.

With love,

My Birding Journey

My birding journey started four years ago (2017) when my cousin (Mr. Sancha Rai~Teacher) introduced me to the Birds of Bhutan Face Book page group. Ever since I have never looked back in this beautiful journey of Bird Watching except some flashback of catapult business in the cowboy days. It was kind of hunter to hermit way of my journey for my personal growth and contribution to the society at large. My colleagues were surprised to see me take this hobby as a mining man but my avid birder friends were amazed to see me join them. Their company and guidance helped me identify many species and its habitat till date.

My dream of adding at least one new species record to Bhutan’s Birds List was fulfilled when I photographed Black-headed Cuckooshrike (Lalage melanoptera) in Nyoenpaling (Pugli B), Phuntshopelri, Samtse on 19th May, 2021. I have also added several new lists to the Birds of Samtse like Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) to the latest sighting of Dark-sided Thrush (Zoothera marginata) from Pendenling (Gomtu) which is also a third record to Bhutan as per the experts. Some of my bird’s photographs in the book- A Guide to the Birds of Samtse, 1st edition by Mani Wangdi & Tashi Tshering and a paper on Samtse’s Song Birds (An Annotated Bird Checklist for the Selected Regions of Samtse recorded between 1 September and 31 December 2020) with our team DBA- (Dragon Birding Amigos) are my achievements so far in this worthy journey. I have recorded about 213 species in Phuntshopelri, Samtse. The list will keep growing for future record.

The birds are most fascinating species and dwell closest to human habitat. Birding is simple and lively activity. We don’t require expansive cameras or other gadgets. Walk around your gardens, you will see birds. Peep through your windows and doors, you will see birds. Drive a car to your office, you will see birds. Close your eyes and you will hear their songs from morning to dusk. Its presence has cultural and ecological significance in the respective regions. Their contribution in pest control to pollination to seed dispersal is a paramount importance for balanced ecosystem where everyone of must us at least know about it. A birder has lot more things to know and appreciate the benefits of bird watching.

Thus, birding has not only helped me in its scope but beyond its purpose to a better and meaningful life as a good human being. I could spend my time in positive ways both by learning and being close to the nature often. It is one way of mindfulness in simple way to watch birds and be in the present moment. I can now tell my children the real stories of the birds to protect them and to conserve the nature. We must encourage our younger generations to know more about nature than simply the physical and technological world.
